In Wyoming, trappers can legally set traps almost anywhere on public land, including on or right next to hiking trails. There's no required "setback," the minimum distance a trap must be placed from a trail or road. Without one, the traps meant for wildlife are catching something else: kids and pets.
Since 2000, over 100 dogs have been reported caught in traps in Wyoming, with at least 13 killed... and that's likely a drastic undercount, since our state doesn't formally track these incidents. Nationwide, pet and child injuries from traps on public land have been documented across multiple states.
Ballot measures take real time, effort, and resources. Before we start gathering signatures, we need a critical mass of people supporting AND bringing friends and family to support too!

In Wyoming, the requirements for an initiated state statute to make the ballot are equal to 15% of people who voted in the previous general election. As of the most recent general election, that is ~40k signatures. Further complicating this is that the signatures must consist of 15% of qualified voters in at least two-thirds of the counties - meaning 15% of qualified voters in at least 16 counties.
